When funnel drop-off is a measurement lie
A broken step event can invent a cliff that product never caused.
Product meetings escalate when a funnel chart shows a 40% cliff between two adjacent steps. Sometimes that cliff is real. Often the second step never fired on Android 14, or only fired after a permission dialog that half of users never see.
Before rewriting onboarding, walk the path on the devices your users actually hold and watch the live stream. Note every silent miss. Ask whether the step is client-only, server-confirmed, or both.
Identity resets between web and app are another quiet culprit. Users who continue on a second device look like new funnel entrants who abandoned mid-path.
A Funnel Instrumentation Review is deliberately narrow: one path, deep QA, a script you can rerun after every release so the lie does not return unnoticed.
